Water Volume Calculation
Using Salt and a Salinity Meter

Measuring water volume in ponds is difficult to do using simple volume calculations. Simple water volume calculators only estimate water volume. Most ponds have varying shapes and depths including water within the plumbing, the filtration, waterfalls, and streams. So the best way to calculate water volume is to use dissolved salt measurements. The correct way is to measure the salinity, then add salt and measure the salinity again. The difference in these measurements together with how much salt is added will result in how much total water volume there is in the pond.

1st round of salt addition
Step Procedure Reading
1 Calibrate the salinity reader
2 Take salinity reading and record 0.00 %
3 Add known quantity (kg) salt 40 kg
4 Allow sufficient time for salt to dissolve 24 hours Min
5 Take salinity reading and record 0.14 %
6 Increase in salinity 0.14
7 Pond volume 28571.43 Volume ltr

Calculation: Step 3 ÷ Step 6 × 100 = Pond Volume

2nd round of salt (add the kg added in 1st round)
Step Procedure Reading
1 Calibrate the salinity reader
2 Take salinity reading and record 0.14 %
3 Add known quantity (kg) salt 20 kg total
4 Allow sufficient time for salt to dissolve 24 hours Min
5 Take salinity reading and record 0.21 %
6 Increase in salinity 0.07
7 Pond volume 28571.43 Volume ltr

Calculation is: Step 3 ÷ by Step 6 × 100 = Pond Volume
