This is a very effective method of filtering pond water and it is widely used. Especially if it has a moving bed filter attached to it.
Its main issue is cost of building it and it does take up quite a bit of space. The norm is that it should be 7 to 10% of your pond volume.
It is quite a laborious task to keep it clean. The faster the flow through this filter the more rows of brushes are needed. I have seen them work quite well with as little as 3 rows but then the brushes must overlap well.

These filters in a "Pump To Configuration" gravity into a fountain or directly into your pond is now available from Koi and Pond Services. High flow rates are possible as we have a good brush area and a fair size moving bed attached to it.
