Salt should not be used in conjunction with Malachite Green. Salt and Malachite Green form a toxic combination.
I would maybe do it with a salt content of less then .05%. Neville Boardman will be more experienced in this answer .
I believe it has been tested before and the answer is yes you can. Old myth.
@k-is-for-koi Up to .4% salt is fine with any of the usual koi medicines. In some cases it will also enhance the effect.
Salt in itself is a good medication for some issues but the continues use of salt is not one that I would recommend. Also one cannot just add a bit of salt every now and again. You have to measure your pond salinity.
To remove salt from your pond water is another major issue.
@adeelns I just thought I would update you regarding my question about MG+F and salt. I used the product and it had no effect on any of the koi at all. They actually seem to be much better than before. I had some seriously athletic jumpers in the pond and I haven't heard a splash for awhile now. Touch wood the treatment has worked. I didn't do a follow up treatment though. Something I might have to consider.
I think I just found my pond’s problem! Where can I get Malachite Green? What is the dosage for interests sake? I remember using it in my fishtanks way back when but haven’t seen it in pet shops lately. (My pond, including filter, is 12kl).
@denalialaska thanks so much for for this update , i didnt have the gutts to try this and i am glad your fish have proven to be ok and handled this treatment and are doing well .-
@carollbonsai nevilles mix is 👌🏼. He can courier to you and its on his online store , ive just placed a order on teusday and received yday .effortless .
Hi Caroll,
I decided to supply my M green and Formalin separate. So you need to buy one of each from the site and then just use both to dose. The dosage is reasonably strong and you must dose correctly to your pond volume. It will take care of Costia, no problem.
When dosing as a precautionary I would recommend just a single dose will suffice, if you do have issues repeat after 7 Days.
Just a quick update to my post: I placed an order in the shop for meds and an air pump. My order arrived safely and in good time, given the fact that I live in a rural area. Fast and efficient service and definitely cheaper than any other online shop. (I am not knocking any other person, I live far from cities and rely on online shopping). Thank you for keeping contact and the advice on the treatment. Will definitely shop again.
There are numerous difficulties treating koi problems with chemicals/medications bought over the counter.
Firstly many koi keepers do not have a clue what their pond volumes are. Consequently when they purchase medicines/chemicals they give the wrong information to the person helping them and when the pond / koi collection is overdosed they are quick to point fingers.
Secondly - many people who supply medications under dose - as a precaution - and consequently the dose has little or no effect.
Thirdly - koi keepers are quick to treat their koi collections and many of the common bacterial and parasitic infections we see are becoming resistant to treatment.
The dose to treat or kill a problem on koi is very close to the strength that can kill the fish as well as the problem.
There is no such thing as treating a koi collection - just in case. Or injecting an antibiotic - just in case. Either the koi or collection has a disease or it does not.
Koi are usually healthy animals - when kept in hygienic water conditions. Their natural immune system fights infections - when they get them - if they get them. We place far too much emphasis on unhealthy or sick koi.
Be aware that infections can occur - just as they do in humans.
And remember - you cannot hear a koi scream underwater.
